Bodegas Pago de Larrainzar was inaugurated in September 2006, when it began to market its first wine, Pago de Larrainzar 2004. It is located next to the Monastery of Irache near Estella.
It is a family project led by Miguel Canalejo Larrainzar, a businessman from Pamplona, together with his children; the project has recovered a thousand-year-old tradition. The Larrainzar family made wine in Ayegui over 100 years ago.
The bodega was created with the commitment to make a single red wine with a marked personality. It is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet, Tempranillo and Garnacha grapes from 15 hectares of state-owned vineyards planted adjoining the bodega.
After a manual harvest and a double sorting process, the chosen grapes from each plot are fermented and macerated separately in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged for 12 months in French oak casks. The blending is a key stage in the winemaking process, which is carried out under the supervision of the renowned oenologist Ignacio de Miguel. The bodega works with different cooperages and varying toasting levels to provide the wine with greater complexity and personality. One third of the casks are replaced every year.
